The piece is constructed from concrete and physical stock certificates of an S-Corp that maintains corporate status. These legal instruments are designed to structure ownership, limit liability, and separate value from accountability. Reformed into a broken, unified surface, the distinctions between company, shareholder, and legal protection collapse into one material field.
The price corresponds precisely to the accumulated IRS tax liabilities and penalties associated with the corporation from which the certificates are drawn. It is not symbolic, but a visible debt accruing interest over time. In this sense, the work does not stabilize in value. It behaves like debt—compound, persistent, and indifferent to market conditions.
Left unsold, it continues to “appreciate” through obligation rather than speculation. To acquire the work is to settle the current liability. The transaction resolves corporate debt within the frame of the art market, collapsing financial instruments into a single exchange.
